Why Start With Ledger®?

Getting started with cryptocurrency is exciting, but it also comes with risks. Online wallets and exchanges are frequent targets of hackers, making self-custody with a Ledger® device the safest choice. Ledger® hardware wallets use a certified secure element chip to store your private keys offline, away from malicious actors. By visiting Ledger.com/start, you ensure you’re following the official setup path without risk of phishing.

Step 1: Unbox and Verify

When your Ledger® device arrives, always check the packaging. It should be sealed, untampered, and contain your device, USB cable, and recovery sheets. Ledger® devices have built-in authenticity checks, so the first time you plug in, the Ledger Live™ app will confirm your wallet’s genuineness.

Step 2: Download Ledger Live™

The Ledger Live™ app is your control hub. From here, you install crypto apps, track balances, and manage transactions. Download it only from Ledger.com/start for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android. Never trust third-party sites, as fake downloads are one of the most common attack vectors.

Step 3: Initialize and Create a PIN

Choose “Set up as new device.” You’ll be asked to create a 4–8 digit PIN code. This PIN acts as your first security layer. Avoid birthdays or repeated numbers, and make sure it’s something only you would know. If someone tries to guess, too many failed attempts will automatically wipe the device.

Step 4: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

Your device will display 24 random words. This is your recovery phrase. Think of it as the master key to your funds. Write it down carefully on the recovery sheet provided. Never save it digitally, and never share it with anyone. Ledger® will never ask for it — any request for your phrase is a scam.

Step 5: Install Crypto Apps

Using Ledger Live™, you can install apps for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and thousands of other tokens. Each app allows your device to interact securely with the corresponding blockchain. Once installed, you can add accounts and start receiving crypto to your Ledger® address.
